5 Effective Ways to Help Your Cat Drink More Water in Summer

Cats naturally have a low thirst drive, which makes hydration especially important during warm weather. A few simple changes at home can encourage regular drinking and support urinary and kidney health.

1. Offer Several Water Stations

Place clean bowls in quiet, easy-to-reach areas away from litter boxes. Multiple stations are particularly helpful in multi-cat homes, where one cat may block access to a shared resource.

2. Choose the Right Bowl

Many cats prefer wide, shallow ceramic, glass, or stainless-steel bowls that do not touch their whiskers. Wash the bowls daily and replace the water regularly so it remains fresh.

3. Try Moving Water

A pet fountain may appeal to cats that prefer running water. Clean the pump and filter according to the manufacturer’s instructions to prevent residue and bacterial buildup.

4. Add Moisture to Meals

Wet food naturally contains more moisture than dry food. If your veterinarian agrees, you can also mix a small amount of water into wet food. Make changes gradually to avoid upsetting your cat’s stomach.

5. Keep Water Cool and Inviting

Move water bowls away from direct sunlight. Some cats enjoy a few ice cubes, while others prefer room-temperature water. Observe what your cat chooses.

Contact your veterinarian if your cat suddenly drinks much more or less than usual, urinates differently, becomes lethargic, or stops eating. Changes in thirst can indicate an underlying health problem.
